Incontinence in Older Dogs: Senior Dog Home Setup, Causes Vets Check and When to Call
By The Old Dog Products team · Published
Not veterinary advice. This article is general information. It isn’t veterinary advice and can’t replace an exam. If you’re worried about your dog, call your vet.
Waking up to a wet dog bed again is exhausting, and your dog probably can’t help it. Leaking during sleep is something vet sources describe often in older dogs, especially spayed females (Merck Veterinary Manual). Incontinence in senior dogs means urine leaks out without your dog meaning to pee, often while they’re lying down. It’s different from a dog choosing to pee in the house. Here’s how to get it checked, and how to set up your home so you and your older dog are both comfortable.
Incontinence in older dogs: what it looks like
You might find a damp patch where your senior dog has been lying, dribbles of urine on the floor as they walk, or wet fur on the back legs. Some dogs don’t seem to notice at all. Incontinence in dogs can start gradually, a few drips at first, or suddenly. Dogs of both sexes can be affected, though it’s especially common in spayed females (Merck).
🚩 Call your vet promptly if…
- This is new leaking or accidents (always worth a check)
- Your dog strains to pee, pees only drops, or can’t pee. A blocked urinary tract can be life-threatening (Animal Trust Vets)
- There’s blood in the urine, or it smells strong
- Your dog is drinking or peeing much more than usual (VCA)
- Accidents come with back-leg weakness, wobbliness, or collapse. Go urgently (ACVS)
- There’s red, sore, or broken skin around the back end
Why senior dogs become incontinent (what your vet checks)
Incontinence has several possible causes, and they need different care. Vet sources list:
- Weak urethral sphincter (USMI). This is the most common cause in adult spayed female dogs. Typical sign: leaking while lying down or asleep (Merck)
- Urinary tract infection
- Conditions that cause more drinking and peeing, such as diabetes, kidney disease, or Cushing’s disease
- Nerve or spine problems
- Excess weight pressing on the bladder
- Bladder problems such as a weak bladder outlet (Animal Trust Vets)
Your vet will usually take a history, examine your dog, and may check urine and blood (dvm360). Your vet will want to find the cause of incontinence first, because the right plan depends on it. Decisions about medicines belong to your vet, and we don’t cover them here.
Why is my 12-year-old dog suddenly incontinent?
A sudden change always deserves a vet visit, whatever your dog’s age. Your vet will look for the cause of incontinence rather than putting it down to old age, because an infection, a bladder problem, a nerve problem or another illness can all play a part (Animal Trust Vets).
What can I give my elderly dog for incontinence?
Don’t give anything without your vet. Your vet can talk you through options, including medicines, once they know what’s causing the leaking.
Urine leaks vs accidents: what to note
Accidents in a dog with dementia aren’t always incontinence. A dog may simply forget their house training (Cornell). Note when and how accidents happen for your vet: asleep, while walking, or squatting indoors. A dog who leaks in their sleep and a dog who squats to pee in the house can have very different causes, and male dogs and female dogs can differ too.
The don’ts (from vet guidance)
- Don’t restrict water unless your vet tells you to
- Don’t scold or punish. Your dog isn’t doing it on purpose
- Don’t let your dog lie in soiled bedding
- Don’t clean with ammonia products. They smell like urine to dogs (Animal Trust Vets)
Setting up your home for an incontinent dog: four zones
Zone 1: The bed (layer it)
From the bottom up:
- Washable waterproof mat or underpad on the floor (protects the floor)
- Bed with a waterproof liner or water-resistant cover
- Washable absorbent pad on top where your dog lies (swap it every morning)
- A spare set so one can be in the wash Animal Trust Vets recommends waterproof covers and absorbent pads on beds and furniture (source).
Zone 2: Furniture and car
Waterproof covers on the sofa and the car seat, plus a washable throw on top.
Zone 3: Floors and cleanup
- Enzymatic pet-urine cleaner (Animal Trust Vets suggests enzymatic or hydrogen-peroxide-based cleaners). Spot-test first, because peroxide can bleach fabric and carpet
- Paper towels, a bucket, and a spray bottle kept in one “accident caddy”
- Washable pads by the door and near the bed for night-time
Zone 4: Your dog’s body
- Gentle daily cleaning of the back legs and genital area with pet-safe wipes or a damp cloth, then pat dry. This helps avoid urine scald and skin irritation (Animal Trust Vets)
- Ask your groomer about a hygiene trim around the back end
Pads, bedding and diapers for an incontinent dog
- Belly bands for male dogs wrap around the waist and catch urine. A dog diaper with a tail hole suits female dogs, or males who also have stool accidents.
- Incontinence pads (washable or disposable) can go on the bed, in the crate, or inside a band or diaper as a liner.
- Change them often, check the skin daily, and give diaper-free time. Ask your vet whether they’re suitable for your dog.
- Our belly band vs diaper guide covers fit, sizing and getting your dog used to wearing one.
Daily routine for a senior dog with incontinence (helping an incontinent dog)
- More frequent potty trips, including first thing in the morning, after naps, after meals, and right before bed (Animal Trust Vets)
- Gentle, regular exercise, as advised by your vet
- Keep a log of when accidents happen, then share it with your vet (there’s a simple table below)
- Plan for nights. If most of the leaking happens overnight, see senior dog peeing at night.
- Night potty trips. Offer a last potty trip right before bed, and if your dog wakes and wanders, take them out again before settling them back down. Keep a washable pad by the bed for the walk to the door.
- Freshen the bed every morning. Swap the top pad, check the layer underneath, and wash anything damp so your dog always lies on something dry.
- Be gentle about it. An incontinent dog isn’t misbehaving. Clean up quietly, then give them a fuss.
Still the vet route: new leaking, drinking more than usual, or blood in the urine always needs a vet visit. Your vet can talk you through options.

Questions to ask your vet
- What’s causing the leaking? Do we need a urine test or bloodwork?
- Could an infection or another illness be part of it?
- What are the options for my dog?
- Are diapers or belly bands OK for my dog? How do I protect their skin?
- What signs mean I should call right away?
