Senior Dog Peeing at Night? Incontinence in Older Dogs
By The Old Dog Products team · Published
Not veterinary advice. This article is general information to help you care for your dog at home. It isn’t veterinary advice and can’t replace an exam. If you’re worried about your dog, call your vet.
Finding a puddle every morning is wearing, and it’s rarely “bad behavior.” Does your senior dog pee in the house at night? Night-time accidents in older dogs can have several different causes, and the pattern you notice is valuable information for your veterinarian.
Incontinence in senior dogs vs night-time accidents
Urinary incontinence means urine leaks without your dog meaning to urinate, often while they sleep, so you find a wet patch on their bedding and your dog seems unaware. A night-time accident is different: your dog gets up and chooses a spot indoors, usually because they couldn’t hold it or couldn’t get out. Incontinence in older dogs and indoor accidents can overlap, so describe both to your vet.
🚩 Call your vet promptly if…
- Your dog strains, passes only drops, or can’t pee. A blocked urinary tract can be life-threatening (Animal Trust Vets)
- There’s blood in the urine, vomiting, or lethargy
- Your dog is drinking or peeing much more than usual (VCA)
- Accidents come with back-leg weakness or wobbliness (ACVS)
Urinary incontinence: things your vet may check (UTI, kidney, neurological)
Watch for a few nights and note what you see. Your vet will want to know.
| What you notice | What vets consider |
|---|---|
| Wet patch where they slept, dog unaware | Leaking during sleep is typical of urethral sphincter weakness (USMI), most common in spayed females (Merck) |
| Large puddles, drinking a lot | Conditions that increase thirst and urine, e.g., diabetes, kidney disease, Cushing’s (Animal Trust Vets) |
| Frequent small pees, maybe straining | A urinary tract infection or other bladder problems (Animal Trust Vets) |
| Squats indoors as if house training is forgotten, plus confusion | Loss of house training is a sign vets associate with cognitive dysfunction (Cornell) |
| Leaking plus weak back legs | Neurological problems such as spinal cord disease can affect bladder control (Animal Trust Vets) |
| Can’t get up or posture to pee | Mobility or spinal problems. UC Davis notes some dogs with degenerative myelopathy seem incontinent because they can’t get into position (UC Davis) |
| This table helps you describe what you see. It can’t tell you the cause; your vet will examine your dog and may test urine and blood (dvm360). |
Bedding and leak-proof setups for the night
- Last potty trip as late as possible, and go out with your dog so you know they went.
- Don’t restrict water unless your vet tells you to (Animal Trust Vets).
- Night lights on the route to the door.
- Layered bed (floor underpad → waterproof liner → washable pad) and a pad by the door. See Incontinence home setup.
- A wrap or diaper overnight if your vet agrees. See Belly band vs diaper.
- An enzymatic cleaner for accidents. Avoid ammonia products.
- Never punish. Your dog can’t help it.
- Comfort matters too. A dog with sore joints from arthritis may not want to get up in the night. Mention stiffness to your vet; see back legs giving out.
Dogs with incontinence and dementia: night routine
Dogs with dementia may wake, wander and forget to ask to go out. Cornell links loss of house training to cognitive dysfunction (Cornell). A steady evening routine, a last trip out together, and a night light on the route can help. Our dog dementia night routine has a template.
Treatment options your vet may discuss
Once your veterinarian knows the underlying cause, they can talk you through options, including medicines, and how to manage incontinence at home in the meantime. Don’t start any home remedy or supplement without asking first. A vet plan plus a practical night setup like the one above is a common approach.
Night log for your vet
A few nights of notes help your vet tell a leak during sleep from more frequent urination.
| Date | Last potty time | Water in evening (rough) | Found wet? Where? | Puddle size | Awake or asleep? |
|---|
Is it a puddle or a leak? Notes that help your vet
Merck notes that some dogs, most often spayed females, leak urine without knowing it while they sleep (Merck). A dog who squats and pees in the house on purpose looks different from an old dog who wakes up lying in a damp patch. Note which one you see and tell your vet. Washable incontinence pads for dogs under the bedding make the morning check easy and keep the bed dry while you wait for the appointment.
Questions to ask your vet
- What do you think is causing this? Should we test urine and blood?
- Is my dog drinking more than normal?
- What are the options your vet may discuss for managing it?
- Is a diaper OK overnight? How do I protect their skin?
